LEEDS UNITED V ROTHERHAM TOWN RESERVES
IMPROVED DISPLAY BY LEEDS
A drawn game was the result of the meeting of elevens representing the two clubs, but as far as Leeds United were concerned the verdict
might be considered quite satisfactory. Their display was a vast improvement, upon that of the previous week and conclusively demonstrated
that the club managers have the material from which a good team can be evolved. In Mason, late of Frickley United, they possess not only a
swift runner, but an ideal wing man., who knows how to shoot and centre well. Rotherham Town played a good game, and were slightly the
superior side, cohesion all round being their chief strength.
Before play finished there would be quite 4,000 spectators present, and as the ground was in a fairly good state and little wind blowing, the
conditions were condusive to accurate play. The first half was remarkable for the number of corner kicks, gained by Rotherham, three within as
many minutesbeing forced about half-way through, yet none produced anything tangible. It was left to the United to do the scoring, Ellson putting
his side ahead after about half-an-hours play. Leeds certainly had as much of the play after the interval as their opponents, and Smith put the
United further in front after fifteen minutes' play. Victory seemed certain for the home side, but Rotherham falsified this idea, by scoring two goals
in a very short space of time. Walker getting the first one and Grierson the second. with the teams once more on an equality a keen struggle took
place for the mastery. United had the better of the closing play, but want of luck and a skilful custodian were too much for them.
